Phnom Penh: Thailand-based Super Market Big C eyes for investment in a supermarket in Phnom Penh after the company has been investing in Poipet.
Mr. Soung Sok Heang, an investor of Borey Star Gold in Poipet and who has been working closely with Big C Company, said last weekend that the management of Big C had told him about the project that the company would come into Phnom Penh and other provinces with significant economic potential.
The company is currently constructing the Big C supermarket in Poipet and about 50 percent of the whole construction has been completed, he said.
“However, the company has not yet told me about the project location in Phnom Penh and also the investment capital yet. It is a big company that will contribute to the future of Cambodia’s economy and society in the future,” he said.
Poipet currently has more than 150,000 residents, of which about 35,000 are foreigners.
Ann Sothida, country director of CBRE Cambodia, who has studied the shopping mall in Phnom Penh, said the number of malls in Phnom Penh has not surpassed the current demand because the number of the shopping malls compared to the population is small.
Now mall investors have taken different customers because they are focusing on different locations so there is no problem, but she warns that the number of supermarkets will increase further in the city, leading to oversupply, she added.
