Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen has already approved a plan to establish Grand City Siem Reap, located near the new International Airport in Siem Reap.
The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Thong Khon, said this morning, April 5 that the Master Plan of the new city has already been approved by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, while the Ministry has been sending documents and city development plans to the relevant institutions to check because this work is to be done inter-ministerially. He said that the new city is located near the new airport in Sot Nikum district, Siem Reap province, an area not under the protection of the Apsara Authority.
“So far, the new city has not undergone any major development activities, as the preparation of the dissemination workshop on the plan has been suspended due to the Covid-19,” he said. “However, we have not yet been able to confirm the size of the area and the detailed plan of the city, but everything is ready because Samdech (Prime Minister Hun Sen) has already approved.”
The construction of 38 roads in Siem Reap has been actively promoting the city to attract national and international tourism, he added.
The government has been working with China-based Yunnan to build an international airport in the 700-hectare in Sotnikum district and plans to invest about $900 million. According to the plan, the airport will be completed in early 2023.
